Episode 39: Amy Swims, Amy Rides, Amy Runs, Amy Eats A Muffin

July 25, 2011

Listen to Episode 39

Yes, while Amy did an XC and sprint tri, others did other stuff. So we talked about it. We especially spoke about Astoria and a nice 5K of the sort we should all be looking out for.

Tavia ran on the Astoria Track, and Joe mentioned his NYC-Area track map (which now includes Astoria) and asked that people who know about other tracks in the area let him know for their inclusion.

Episode 38: A Race Grows In Brooklyn

July 18, 2011

Listen to Episode 38

Steve is rightfully excited. The Inaugural Brooklyn Marathon. 8am. November 20. Prospect Park. It’s Official.

The New York City Marathon’s first race was 4 laps of Central Park and 127 finishers. Well, Brooklyn will just about double that. eight laps of Prospect Park and 250 entrants. (Granted, it’ll cost more than $1 but that’s inflation for you.)

After that, Julie and Joe spoke of their Central Park Conservancy 4-Miler experiences, and then about their, and Steve’s, adventures at the Van Cortlandt Track Club’s annual 2 X 2 relay at Van Cortlandt.

Brenn mentioned the upcoming Diamond League event in Monaco, and a stacked 5,000 field. He also brought us up-to-date on the Media Challenge 3.5 mile series, in Central Park.

Episode 37, With Melanie Jones and Christoph Baaden

July 10, 2011

Listen to Episode 37

Julie saw Melanie Jones’s “Endure: Run. Woman. Show” and loved it. So afterwards she chatted with Jones and asked if she’d want to come on the podcast. And she came on. So we spoke of that. Jones wants runners to see the show. So go see it!

Steve brought on Christoph Baaden, the c0-director of Hood-to-Coast, a new movie that was premiered in January and is returning to, as they say, “select theaters”, including one in Brooklyn the week beginning July 15. Info on the showings are on the movie’s homepage.

Episode 36

Listen to Episode 36

A short episode. Talk of Tavia’s adventure at the Governor’s Island 10K.

Episode 35: Joe, Karla, Steve

June 20, 2011

Listen to Episode 35

Karla ran and Steve, well, ran the Lousy T-Shirt 5K, a certified course in Riverside Park. It was a fine effort for NYCRuns’s first race, and there’ll be more of them.

There was talk about the imminent demise of the USATF Metropolitan Chapter, and what might happen next. Will there be more alternatives to NYRR races?

Steve, by the way, was calling in from Burlington, Vermont, having just completed the Green Mountain Relay. So we heard a bit about that non-New York (but popular with New Yorkers) event. Karla’s pumped about her first tri. In Ontario.

Speaking of NYRR race, Joe ran the Portugal Run. He have a brief report on it.

As promised, here’s Julie’s video of the finish of the Portugal Run:

Episode 34: The Mini, adidas, etc.

June 13, 2011

Listen to Episode 34

Big crew on June 12. Karla sang that national anthem before the Mini and then ran the race. Tavia ran the race. Julie watched the race. Emmy missed the race. And they all spoke about the race. And Julie has some videos (the start’s below).

Julie, Tavia, and Brenn then watched the adidas Grand Prix Diamond-League meet at Icahn Stadium.

A lot going on with those two events, but Amy joined part-way through with tales of her epic Chesapeake Bay swim. And the muffin she enjoyed after her Van Cortlandt 5K on Thursday. And Emmy and Frank chatted about some of the three races they did run over the week-end.

Joe mentioned a meet-up at the Rockies in two weeks, on June 26. Sort of a getting-acquainted session. And Steve? He kept to himself.

Episode 33: Ari in Vermont, Joe in Albany, Frank all about town

June 6, 2011

Listen to Episode 33

Ari had a tough race in Vermont, but came back a week later for a nice PR in the Celebrate Israel 4 miler. Joe struggled through one-loop of the Memorial Day Races at Van Cortlandt. And Frank, well he did (with Emmy) the Van Cortlandt thing and he did the Celebrate Israel thing. And in the meantime, Joe worked at the Freihofer’s Women’s 5K on Saturday, in Albany. The winning time: 15:19. Did you know that Joannie wears a Kenyan-flag bracelet?

Here’s a Freihofer’s video:

Episode 32: How Long Is It?

May 30, 2011

Listen to Episode 32

On our Memorial Day Week-End show, Joe was joined by Steve, Brenn, Frank, and Emmy, and the latter two pretty much took over. The topic: Phil McCarthy of New York, recently set the (to-be-certified) record for miles covered in 48 hours: 257.7 miles. (His report. And Frank’s (that’s Frank’s report on Phil, not on Frank’s having done it).) Frank and Emmy are quite familiar with these things, and we can a good, educational chat about Ultras. Did you know “Beware the Chair”? I do.

We spoke about a few more things. How are you going to top, though, 257.7 miles? But the Memorial Day Marathon at Van Cortlandt did come up and (as I write this on Memorial Day) Frank, Emmy, and Joe did portions of it. Brenn had a bit of a misadventure in the Media Run last week.

Although it’s not official, summer is here. And here’s a video from the Holiday Marathon. Alas, it was a tad warmer today than it was for Vanentine’s Day:

Episode 31: Some Racing Going On

Episode 30: A Tale Of Two NYC Parks: Forest and Central

May 15, 2011

Listen to Episode 30

As we do these shows, we come back again and again to high-quality, small races in the area. Tonight we talked about a nice four-miler in Forest Park, Queens. Tavia (race report) and Brenn ran it. The bonus: Finding a nice oasis for trail running in Queens, and the prospect of using a nice new track. Sweet. [And more about the Forest Park Runners below.]

In the opposite corner, the Healthy-Kidney 10K. Steve reported on it briefly, but our discussion turned to the following photo, posted by NYRR:

Listen to the show. You’ll find out what we’re talking about.

And Joe mentioned a post he did: Why Would Anyone Run An NYRR Race?

Finally, Tavia mentioned a reference in New York Runner (NYRR’s magazine) about Grete Waitz and her running the Trevira Twosome. That was a 10-mile race in the early 80s in which men and women teamed up and the results were based on combined times. Joe did it several times. Tavia mentioned it as something that NYRR could do to make its races more attractive. A bit of fun on top of the race itself.

Some info from Bonnie of the Forest Park Running Club:

“We are a Queens-based running club together since 1980. We run on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays in the morning at 8 am, year round, all weather. In spring, summer and early fall we also run Wednesday evenings at 6:45 pm. We always meet at the intersection of Forest Park drive and Woodhaven Boulevard.

“Our club consists of adult Runners and Walkers and we range in skills and pace. However, we all started out pretty simply, so don’t let that get in your way.

“Generally we use the asphalt and trails of the park and as our terrain is both flat and hilly, it is a good workout.

“Come on out and meet us. A year’s membership is only $20 for new members (includes team cap) $10 for regular renewals and $5 for seniors. It includes the monthly newsletters, bagel breakfasts, discounts on team apparel, etc.” Return
